Double at stake as Trewern United and Meifod meet in village cup final
TREWERN United ended Meifod’s double dreams with victory in the Boys and Boden Montgomeryshire League Cup final cup in Llanymynech on Saturday. The final at Station Road proved a tight affair with little to choose between the league champions and the Tigers in the first-half. However it was the Kings who led just before the break with Phil Hughes capitalising from eight yards after Alun Hughes and Rob Evans combined. The second-half proved just as tight as both teams cancelled each other out. However Trewern equalised in the 83rd minute when a great through ball was helped on by Barry Haralambous to the Tobias Divall just outside the left hand edge of the box and he fired his first time left foot shot into Meifod keeper Ewan James’ top left hand corner for a stunning strike.
With extra time looming, Trewern snatched glory when Jay Bishop’s long aerial cross-field ball from outside the right of his own box found Haralambous on the left who cut into the left hand edge of the box before seeing his right foot shot from rebound into the path of to Joe Beddoes who fired home. The trophy was presented to jubilant skipper Matt Windsor by Wyn Griffiths, president of the Montgomeryshire League. Trewern United spokesman Nathan Jones was delighted with the performance as the club added another piece of silverware to the trophy cabinet. He said: “We are absolutely delighted with the result and the performance by the lads. “They all showed great character to keep fighting until the end and get a deserved result.
“Also, a big shout out to Chris Edwards and his Meifod team, they really made it another hard battle. “Also thank you to Llanymynech who really promoted the day brilliantly and made it into and even more special day. There is no respite for either side with the rivals set to meet in the final of the Village Cup at Llansantffraid’s Treflan ground on Friday night with both sides gunning for further silverware following successful campaigns.
