The Timmins Selects Under-19 Girls Basketball team has had a very successful, but challenging, season after earning a Gold Medal at the Ontario Cup. Timmins Selects U-19 overcome obstacles to win gold at Ontario Cup The team is comprised of 13 players from different schools – Timmins High, Roland Michener, O’Gorman High and Thériault, and is coached by the duo of Josée Bélanger and Tanneke Bierman.
“We’ve been coaching the majority of the kids on our squad since they were 12,” said Bélanger. “But with the COVID shutdown, there’s been no basketball for two years. The Selects got the go-ahead to begin tryouts in December, but with the emergence of the Omicron variant, everything was shuttered again until well into February. “We didn’t run a practice until mid-February, and we really only had two practices a week for an hour and 15 minutes,” said Bélanger.
Bélanger said they were unsure of what kind of game-action opportunities the girls would have this year. “Prior to COVID, through Ontario Basketball, there’s a number of tournaments that are advertised and you’re able to register. “But this year, because of the shutdown, and the realities of different communities not having access to gyms through school board permits, there really wasn’t an opportunity to participate in tournaments.
